Twitter Character Limits Explained (2026)

Twitter's character counting rules are not as simple as "280 characters max." Here is exactly how the platform counts characters in different contexts.

Standard Tweets — 280 Characters

Every standard tweet on Twitter (now X) allows up to 280 characters. This limit was doubled from the original 140 characters in November 2017. The limit applies to regular posts, quote tweets, and replies. Media attachments (images, GIFs, videos) and the text of quoted tweets do not count against your character limit.

Twitter/X Premium — 25,000 Characters

Subscribers to X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) can post tweets up to 25,000 characters. These long-form posts display the first ~280 characters followed by a "Show more" link. This effectively merges blogging and tweeting into one format. Replies from Premium users are also allowed up to 25,000 characters.

How Twitter Counts URLs (Always 23 Characters)

This is one of the most common sources of confusion. Twitter automatically wraps every URL through its t.co link shortening service. Regardless of whether your original URL is 10 characters or 200 characters, Twitter always counts it as exactly 23 characters. This applies to both http:// and https:// links. Our counter above accounts for this automatically — paste a URL into the text area and watch the count adjust.

Does Twitter Count Spaces as Characters? Yes.

Every space between words counts as one character. Line breaks also count as one character each. This is consistent with how most social platforms count characters. Emojis are a different story — most emojis count as 2 characters due to Unicode encoding, and compound emojis (like those with skin tone modifiers) can use 4–7 characters.

Twitter vs Other Platform Character Limits

If you manage multiple social media accounts, this comparison helps you plan content across platforms.
