Tile Calculator Guide: How to Estimate Tiles, Grout, and Adhesive

Getting tile quantities wrong is expensive. Under-ordering means delays, discontinued tile headaches, and batch color mismatches. Over-ordering means storing boxes of expensive tile you cannot return. This guide walks through the math for calculating tile, grout, and adhesive quantities for floors, walls, backsplashes, and showers, including waste factors for different layout patterns.

The Tile Calculation Formula

Step 1: Room area = Length × Width (in sq ft)

Step 2: Tile area = Tile length × Tile width (convert to sq ft)

Step 3: Number of tiles = Room area ÷ Tile area

Step 4: Total with waste = Number of tiles × (1 + waste percentage)

Example: 10 × 12 Bathroom Floor

Room area: 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft
Tile size: 12" × 24" = 2 sq ft per tile
Tiles needed: 120 ÷ 2 = 60 tiles
Add 10% waste: 60 × 1.10 = 66 tiles
Tiles per box: 8 tiles/box
Boxes needed: 66 ÷ 8 = 8.25 → Buy 9 boxes (72 tiles)

Grout Estimation

Grout quantity depends on tile size, grout joint width, and tile thickness:

Tile SizeJoint WidthCoverage per 10 lbs
12" × 12"1/8"~25 sq ft
12" × 12"1/4"~12 sq ft
12" × 24"1/8"~30 sq ft
6" × 6"1/8"~15 sq ft
3" × 6" (subway)1/16"~20 sq ft
2" × 2" mosaic1/16"~8 sq ft

Adhesive and Thinset Calculations

  • Standard thinset: Covers 60-80 sq ft per 50 lb bag with ¼" × ¼" notch trowel
  • Modified thinset: Similar coverage but better bond for porcelain and large-format tiles
  • Large-format tiles (24"+): Require back-buttering, reducing coverage by 30%
  • Wall tiles: Use slightly less adhesive than floor installations

Frequently Asked Questions

Room area ÷ tile area + 10-15% waste. Convert tile inches to sq ft first. Always round up to the nearest full box.

10% for straight layouts. 15% for diagonal/herringbone. 20% for complex mosaics or rooms with many obstacles. Keep spares for repairs.

Depends on tile size and joint width. 10 lbs of sanded grout covers ~25 sq ft for 12x12 tiles with 1/8" joints. See coverage chart above.

12x24" tiles create spaciousness with fewer grout lines. 12x12 is versatile. Avoid very large tiles in tiny rooms. Mosaic tiles work for shower floors.
